Are you in the process of divorcing? Consider the following Do’s for parenting:
-
Continue reassuring your children that they can still count on both parents. Both parents being involved in a child’s life is important.
-
Try not to cancel plans with your children. Your scheduled time with children should be priority.
-
Establish a place in BOTH homes for your children that includes belongings that are important to them.
-
Maintain telephone contact with your children.
-
Have your children ready for the other parent for their scheduled visitation time.
-
Be home on time when the children are being dropped off and/or picked up at your home.
-
Try to be open and direct in communicating with the other parent.
-
Help your children understand that marital problems are for adults and are not for discussion with children.
-
Encourage your children to speak freely of their time with the other parent, if they choose. Don’t “pump” them for information.
-
Try to have one one one time with each of your children.
-
Let your children take items that are important to them to the other parent’s home. This helps them feel safe.
-
Allow your children to express their feelings about the divorce without judgment or giving them information that is inappropriate.
